Lower Basin Lake
.
Roughly 7 miles west of Red Lodge is Basin Lake Trail Number 61. Lower Basin Lake is 2.5 miles in and Upper Basin Lake is 4 miles. They are also known as Lower Basin Creek Lake and Basin Creek Lake respectively. The people I know who know of the lakes call them upper and lower.
Both lakes are fairly small but still well worth hiking to in my opinion.
Upper Basin Lake can be great fishing if you time it right. It has been stocked with Golden Trout roughly 3 of the last 4 years.
There are also several beautiful waterfalls along the trail.
To get to the Basin Lake Trail take I-90 to Laurel, then head south on Highway 212 to Red Lodge, then turn right at the far end of town onto Ski Run Road (the road to Red Lodge Mountain ski resort), then turn left onto West Fork Road, also known as Forest Route 71, and then look for the trail-head near Basin Campground.
You can also use the map below for directions from various locations.
More coming soon.
