Lake Gertrude

.

Lake Gertrude is a bit harder of a hike than some but the fishing and the scenery makes it well worth the effort in my opinion.

One of the things that was memorable about the trip that resulted in the video below is there were quite a few times where I saw a fish or two not far from shore and that prompted me to put my waterproof camcorder into the water to get some footage of them.

When I got home and looked at the videos I was excited to see that there were lots of fish in the background and some of the footage turned out pretty well for just a cheapo camcorder.

If you look closely towards the end of the video you can see that there were several hanging out where the current from the inlet would pass directly over them and all they had to do is wait for the food to come to them. Pretty smart actually.

To get to Lake Gertrude take I-90 to Laurel and then head south to Red Lodge on Highway 212. Then take Ski Run Road at the far end of town (the road to Red Lodge Mountain ski resort) and then turn left onto West Fork Road, also known as Forest Route 71, then look for the trail-head.

You can also use the map below to get directions from various locations.
